The Savute

The north western corner of Botswana is dominated by the mysterious climate of the Savute Marsh, which can dry up or flood regardless of local rains and the Gubatsa Hills which rise abruptly out of a very flat landscape. Parts of Savute are almost desert-like, yet nearby lie vast grassy plains teeming with game. Summer rains boost these rich grasslands to which huge herds of zebras migrate south from the Linyanti to gorge on the abundant pastures. Savute also contains a number of pans that retain water for months after the rains, attracting animals to the area long into the dry season. On safari in the Savute, wildlife sightings include: vast migrating herds and ensuing prides of lion; the elusive wild dog; the predatory cheetah and leopard; a large population of hyena; and huge elephant bulls slowly lumbering through the plains.
