QANTAS RETURNS TO SOUTH AFRICA IN JANUARY.

On January 5, 2022, Qantas flights between Johannesburg and Sydney will resume with three weekly flights scheduled. This is three months ahead of their initial plan due to improvements in Australian travel restrictions and the repeal of quarantine rules for fully vaccinated travelers.

Airlines across the globe are continuing to return flights to South Africa after a long period of downturn brought on by the complications of the Covid-19 pandemic. As Australia's borders open after more than 18 months of near-isolation, Qantas is preparing for a surge in travel. The airline is bringing back all of its Australian employees and increasing international flights. Australia's flagship airline will have been missing from South African airspace for nearly two years when flights to South Africa restart.

"We look forward to welcoming on board eligible passengers who want to reunite with their families again," said Michi Messner, Qantas Regional Manager Africa.

  • The trips will take place three times a week and will be conducted on a Boeing 787 aircraft.

  • Initially, only Australians and South Africans who are directly related to Australian nationals can fly to and from Sydney on Qantas' international routes.

  • Before travelling with Qantas, all passengers above the age of 12 must be completely vaccinated against Covid-19 with a vaccine approved by the Australian government.

  • Pfizer's Comirnaty and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccines are both approved by Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and are used in South Africa.

  • Prior to departure, a negative Covid-19 PCR test result will be required.

  • Flights from other Australian cities are expected to be announced as Australian vaccination rates increase nd travel restrictions ease further.

Andrew Stark, MD MEA of Flight Centre, said that the news was "great for the travel industry, great for job creation, great for Qantas... Overall, we couldn’t be happier."
