The Elephant Café veers off the beaten track not only in location but with its unique blend of wild eatables, foraged from magnanimous natural resources. The guests are greeted by the resident elephants, gentle giants of all ages, whose peaceful demeanour washes over their guests, before diner’s taste buds are taken on an African adventure. Seated upon a beautifully-appointed deck suspended over the Zambezi River and handed a champagne cocktail, the guests’ attention gets pulled in a new direction, led by their sense of smell, and taste. The Elephant Café seats an exclusive twenty-four guests and each table is adorned with white linen tablecloths, sparkling glasses, and a singular view out across the river.

 

Chef Annabel Hughes combines indigenous ingredients to create exotic flavours. She commissions community members to delve into the bush and bring her mongongo nuts, marulas, wild sourplums, baobab and muchingachinga fruit. These delicacies are popular with both elephants and humans, simultaneously enriching palates, and the local economy. The meal is prix fixe, so guests can sit back and relax over the delicious and unique “bush gourmet cuisine”. Guests will experience a fine wine list paired with first-class cuisine of a quality rarely found outside major urban centres. Afterwards, they can linger over cappuccinos as they listen to the bush-speak of the animals and birds all around them, satisfied that this was an opportunity they could never experience anywhere else.
