Minors who are travelling with both parents, and share a surname with both parents, will soon no longer be required to produce a birth certificate when travelling to South Africa.
This is thanks to an amendment made to the Department of Home Affair's advisory. The relevant section now states that foreign minors are required to produce visas and passports where applicable. There is no longer any reference to birth certificates, however there will still be certain requirements for unaccompanied minors, children whose parents do not share a surname, as well as children travelling with only one parent.
This change will only be implemented once the new information is loaded on to the International Air Transport Association’s Travel Information Manual Automatic system, which may take some time. Until such a time, birth certificates will still be required when entering South Africa.
